SEGAS contributed greatly to having women conquer their rightful place in Greek athletics. The first efforts date back to 1929 when SEGAS formed a Technical Committee on Women's Athletics. Its members were: Scaramanga-Valaoritou, Kamba, Mela, Spanoudi, Hatzikonstantinou, Trypani, Katsambi and Georgopoulos. Lena Valaoritou - Scaramanga became General Secretary in 1930 and was also Secretary in the Tennis Technical Committee- a position which she held until 1958. She also served as President of the SEGAS Tennis Committee, succeeding I. Ketseas when he became President.
Two Board Members from the first decades of SEGAS's history. I. Ketseas and L. Valaoritou-Scaramanga.
SEGAS was greatly interested in involving women in athletics. Among other activities, SEGAS decided that the Technical Committee for Women's Athletics should visit girls' secondary schools throughout Greece in order to cooperate with those responsible for school sport and thus promote sport for women. According to minutes from the 6 August 1959 Board meeting, issues such as training women coaches and forming women's clubs were discussed.
Athletes training under the supervision of O. Simicek
An effective solution was sought when the Workers' Club, the Greek Girl Guides, the YWCA and other women's organisations were approached. Otto Simicek was a awarded a silver medal and a diploma in recognition of his 25 years of contribution to Greek athletics at the time that the Balkan Games were being held in Constantinople. His efforts also contributed to women's athletics as, from the mid-30s, he was one of the first coaches for women athletes.
